Sharing the importance of education with children….

In the fall of 2008 during the third grade Social Studies Unit on Branches and Levels of Government, Dr. Lee Hawkins graciously agreed to speak to the students in these classes about his role as a Georgia State Senator.

Dr. Hawkins described the election process and time that he spent working at the state capitol in Atlanta. He explained to the students the importance of each studying hard, putting forth their best effort, and making wise choices as they progressed through school. Dr. Hawkins talked about his career as a dentist and how that influenced his decision to enter politics.

Dr. Hawkins also discussed the character and influence that his own father had in his desire to be of service to others. The students enthusiastically asked questions and Senator Hawkins answered each in a manner that the students could easily understand. My students were very attentive and obviously enjoyed his visit. It was evident, as well, that Senator Hawkins enjoyed the opportunity to share time out of his very busy schedule to come to Sardis and talk with the students.
